Why every Nigerian business needs cybersecurity now

From SMEs to enterprises, cyber threats are no longer a "big company" problem. Here is how to build a resilient security posture on any budget.

Why every Nigerian business needs cybersecurity now

The Nigerian digital economy is booming — and so are the attacks against it. In 2025 alone, the Central Bank of Nigeria reported over ₦52bn in verified fraud losses across banks and fintechs. Small and medium businesses are increasingly on the front line, because attackers know they often skip basic defences.

1. Start with the basics — they still work

Multi-factor authentication, patched operating systems, unique strong passwords in a password manager, and encrypted backups will block over 80% of the attacks we see in the wild. None of these cost more than a few thousand naira per employee per year.

2. Train your people

Phishing is still the #1 initial access vector for Nigerian SMEs. A one-hour quarterly training session drops click-through rates by up to 70%. We run these for our clients as part of every security engagement.

3. Get NDPR-ready

The Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) applies to any business that processes personal data of Nigerian residents. Fines can reach 2% of your annual gross revenue. A basic data inventory and a public privacy policy are the two fastest wins.

4. Have a written incident plan

When (not if) something goes wrong, you want a one-page plan on the fridge — who to call, which systems to isolate, and how to communicate. This is the single cheapest thing you can do that dramatically reduces the impact of a breach.
